Walter Williams disappears on a mountain road
Impact is a 1949 American film noir drama directed by Arthur Lubin and starring Brian Donlevy and Ella Raines. Donlevy plays Walter Williams, a powerhouse millionaire industrialist in San Francisco who can make his board of directors bend to his will without breaking a sweat. His home life appears equally secure: he dotes on his beautiful young wife, Irene, while their life together seems perfect.
Walter is due in Denver on business and invites Irene to join him for a scenic trip over the mountains by Lake Tahoe. She withdraws at the last moment, claiming illness, and asks him to take her supposedly poor cousin, Jim Torrence, who is hitchhiking to Evanston, Illinois. The cousin is actually Irene's lover. On a deserted Sierra roadside, Torrence attacks Walter with a lug wrench and sends him down a steep embankment. A pair of moving-van attendants briefly stop at what appears to be an automobile breakdown, startling Torrence into fleeing in Walter's roadster. He drives into a head-on collision with a gasoline tanker.
Walter survives, badly shaken and bloodied. He reaches the open tailgate of the moving van before passing out, then slips away the following morning after seeing a newspaper report of his own death. He arrives in the small town of Larkspur, Idaho, where his ability as a mechanic earns him work at a service station owned by Marsha Peters, a young war widow. Meanwhile, Detective Quincy begins assembling evidence against Irene, who is arrested as an accomplice in Walter's presumed killing and may face the death penalty.
A new life in Larkspur
Walter boards with Marsha and her mother while recovering, enjoying his new surroundings while secretly following events in San Francisco. He wants Irene to pay for her betrayal. After three months, Marsha's mother finds newspaper clippings in his room concerning the murder for which Walter is presumed dead. Walter ultimately tells Marsha what happened. Persuaded by her kindness and her evident love for him, he returns to San Francisco to clear Irene rather than remain hidden.
The return creates further trouble. Irene, described as a consummate liar, turns Walter's account against him and accuses him of arranging events to murder both her and Torrence. The district attorney questions Walter's claim of amnesia as an explanation for his three-month absence. Police find the trial clippings in his Larkspur room, giving weight to Irene's accusation. As Walter faces trial, Marsha seeks help from Quincy, whose doubts about the case make him willing to investigate. Their search eventually brings them to Su Lin, the Williamses' former housekeeper, and to a hotel key that Irene left in a jacket pocket in her apartment closet.
Northern California locations and response
Arthur Lubin signed to direct in June 1948, and Harry Popkin raised the film's $900,000 budget. Filming began in San Francisco on September 14. To save money, virtually the whole picture was made on location in Northern California, including Sausalito, Larkspur in Marin County, Nob Hill in San Francisco, and locations throughout the Bay Area. The Williamses' Nob Hill penthouse was filmed at the historic Brocklebank Apartments, 1000 Mason Street. The actual California town of Larkspur doubled for fictional Larkspur, Idaho, with the Probert family home and gas station at 234 and 238 Magnolia Avenue among the identifiable locations.
The supporting cast includes Charles Coburn, Helen Walker, Anna May Wong, Philip Ahn, and William Wright. Wong's appearance was her first on screen since 1942 and the second to last of her career. San Francisco gossip reporter Sheilah Graham appears as herself, reading a radio news item about the case. Walter's cream-colored luxury car is a 1949 Packard Super Eight roadster. Lubin called the film “a very, very good picture” with “a very nice cast.”
At release, The New York Times critic Bosley Crowther criticized the script and plot, calling what happens “cheaply opportunist and contrived.” In 2013, critic Gary W. Tooze called Impact “the quintessential B film” and praised it as one of the best modest film noirs, with a simple idea twisted to the maximum for late-1940s audiences. Diabolique described it in 2019 as “a solid film noir with a decent cast and typically brisk handling.” The film has appeared on Turner Classic Movies' Noir Alley with Eddie Muller.
