Why collections and not tags
A tag is a filter with an address attached. Tags multiply without limit, each one says very little, and you are left to guess why a particular set of films ended up side by side. A collection makes a claim instead: these films share one page for a reason that fits in a sentence, and that sentence is printed at the top of the page.
Five claims survived. Each page keeps its address for good, and its list is drawn straight from the catalogue, so when a film is added or withdrawn, every collection it belongs to changes on the same day with nobody editing a list by hand.
How the five were chosen
Two are about the reason a film costs nothing, since that tells you more about it than any genre label. The public domain classics are free because their copyright has expired, which makes them free for good. The Hindi collection is free because Shemaroo Movies, Ultra Movie Parlour, Goldmines and NH Studioz chose to upload their own films, and a company can change its mind. Keeping the two apart means you always know which kind you are looking at.
Film noir gets a page because the American cycle of the 1940s and 1950s lost its copyright on a scale no other genre matched, mostly through renewals that were never filed. Detour, D.O.A., Scarlet Street and The Big Combo all stream from the Internet Archive with no adverts. Silent film gets one because it has simply aged out: Battleship Potemkin, The General and the Lon Chaney Phantom of the Opera are all old enough to be free in the United States.
The fifth, films under ninety minutes, sorts by the only question that matters at nine on a Tuesday. It runs shortest first, from Ifrit at an hour to a cluster of titles at exactly ninety.
Where they overlap
A film can belong to more than one collection, and many do. Detour is a public domain title, a noir and a 68-minute feature, so it appears on three pages. Steamboat Bill, Jr. is on three as well: public domain, silent and short. Unlock, a 64-minute Hindi thriller from Ultra Movie Parlour, is on two, and it is one of the few studio uploads short enough to make the weeknight list.
Nothing is forced to choose. If a film fits a collection's one-sentence reason, it is on that page, and the count beside each collection above includes every title that fits.
A first film from each
From the public domain page, His Girl Friday: Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell talking over each other for 92 minutes. From noir, The Hitch-Hiker, which Ida Lupino directed and which wastes none of its 71. From the silent era, The General. From the Hindi list, Aandhi, the 1975 Gulzar drama and the oldest film on it. And from the weeknight page, White Zombie, a 65-minute Bela Lugosi horror film with no adverts. If none of those appeals, open the collection nearest to your mood and pick the shortest title on it; a first film you finish is worth more than a better one abandoned at the halfway mark.
What a collection will never do
It will not rank the films, because there is no honest source for a ranking here and an invented one would only mislead. It will not call a film a masterpiece to earn a click. And it will not include a title whose free stream has not been confirmed, however neatly that title would fit the theme.
Open any film from any collection and you get the same ledger as everywhere else on the site: runtime, provider, whether there are adverts, whether you need an account, which countries the stream reaches, and the date it was last checked. The guide to telling whether a film is legally free explains what those lines mean.
Questions people ask
Can one film sit in several collections?
Yes. Steamboat Bill, Jr. appears under public domain, silent and under ninety minutes, and Detour under public domain, noir and under ninety. A film is listed wherever its facts put it, so the counts on this page can add up to more than the size of the catalogue.
What happens when a free stream disappears?
The film leaves the catalogue, and with it every collection. Because each list is drawn from the catalogue directly, there is no separate copy that could keep pointing at a dead upload after the film has gone.
Why is there no collection of recent films?
Very little recent cinema is legally free, and what there is comes from studios uploading their own titles, not from copyright running out. Ardh from 2022 and the other studio uploads sit in the Hindi collection and in language catalogues such as Turkish and Punjabi; there are not yet enough of them in any one genre or era to group.
Will more collections be added?
When a grouping can be stated in one sentence and there are enough confirmed films to fill it. A page with four entries would be a filter in disguise, and the browse page already has filters for genre, language and length.
