Pratap Singh's search
Rai Bahadur Pratap Singh lives in wealth with his only son and expects him to marry a wealthy woman. His son instead loves a poor woman. When Pratap tells him to forget her, the son refuses, and an angry Pratap orders him from the house.
Years later, a letter tells Pratap that his son has died while his daughter-in-law and grandson remain alive. He sends his manager, Prem, to bring them back, but they do not arrive. Pratap keeps searching, learning that his daughter-in-law is dead and that his grandson lives in a slum with the drunkard Shankar.
