Letters between two strangers

Na Tum Jaano Na Hum is a 2002 Indian Hindi-language romance directed by Arjun Sablok. It stars Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Esha Deol. The film marked the first time Khan and Roshan appeared together. Its title came from a song in Roshan’s debut film, Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, released in 2000.

Esha Malhotra, a bright and spirited woman who has left college, finds a note written by a former student at her school. Its thoughts on love match her own. She calls a radio station, requests a song, and repeats words from the note. Soon afterward, an unidentified man calls to say that he wrote it. He says that their feelings about love and other parts of life seem alike, and that he hopes they can meet someday.

The radio announcer arranges a time and place at the station. The man arrives to find only a letter. It gives neither Esha’s name nor address, but supplies a postbox number and proposes that they become friends through letters. Rahul arranges a postbox number of his own, and the correspondence begins. Rahul is a photographer and commercial pilot, though Esha does not know his identity. The pair do not meet, exchange telephone numbers or reveal their names.

In one letter, Rahul shares his birthday date with Esha. He sends her a toy plane, while she sends him a teddy bear named Tutu. Their private correspondence continues as both remain anonymous to the other.

A campaign and an arranged match

Fate brings Esha and Rahul together when she hires him as photographer for a campaign. Rahul accidentally shares his birthday date, reminding Esha of the man behind the letters, though she does not recognise Rahul as her correspondent. Rahul also fails to recognise Esha. As time passes, the two form a friendship while still writing letters to one another.

Esha’s grandfather, Sanjay Malhotra, wants her to marry. He arranges a meeting with Akshay Kapoor, Rahul’s best friend, who is described as a flirt and womaniser. Rahul had agreed to lead Esha’s campaign in an effort to make Akshay agree to marriage if Rahul found a suitable match for him. Esha is angered by this, though she and Rahul later make up.

Esha has fallen in love with her pen pal and does not want to marry Akshay. Akshay, however, begins to fall for her. Rahul arranges a meeting with the person to whom he has written, then learns that it is Esha. He leaves Tutu with her. Because Akshay is deeply in love with Esha, Rahul decides to sacrifice his own feelings. Esha sends Tutu to Rahul again in an attempt to contact her mystery writer. Rahul calls one final time, asks Esha to forget him, and prepares to leave for Vancouver.

Khan, Roshan and Deol

Saif Ali Khan plays Akshay Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan plays Rahul Sharma, and Esha Deol plays Esha Malhotra. Alok Nath plays Sanjay Malhotra, Esha’s grandfather. Ashima Bhalla plays Tanya, while Rati Agnihotri plays Maya, Esha’s aunt. Moushumi Chatterjee appears as Mrs. Malhotra, Esha’s mother. Shilarna Vaze plays Esha’s best friend Riya.

Anang Desai and Smita Jaykar play Akshay’s parents, Mr. Roshan Kapoor and Mrs. Kapoor. Shilpa Saklani appears as Tina in a special appearance. Retail magnate Kishore Biyani funded the film. According to the Indian trade site Box Office India, the soundtrack album sold around 9,00,000 units and ranked as the year’s fifteenth highest-selling soundtrack.

The film was a critical and commercial failure. Taran Adarsh of IndiaFM gave it 1 out of 5, writing that it had “some moments for the classes, but not much for the masses.” Bhavna Giani of Rediff.com wrote that first-time director Arjun Sablok did “nothing spectacular” with the film. Giani singled out the song “Aha aha,” stating that its visualisation did something different.
