Frankie Machine returns to Chicago
Otto Preminger directed this 1955 American independent drama film noir, adapted from Nelson Algren’s novel of the same name. Frank Sinatra plays Frankie Machine, a former drug addict returning to his run-down North Side Chicago neighborhood after six months of rehabilitation at the federal Narcotic Farm in Lexington, Kentucky. The drug is never named in the film. The American Film Institute says that most contemporary and modern sources assume it is heroin, while Algren’s novel identifies it as morphine.
Frankie comes home clean, determined to build a different life. He wants to become a big-band drummer, and an encounter with Molly, an old flame who works as a hostess in a strip joint and lives in the apartment below his, gives that hope encouragement. Molly supports his musical ambitions in a way that his wife, Zosh, does not. Zosh uses a wheelchair following a car crash caused years earlier by Frankie driving drunk, and Frankie feels responsible for her.
His old neighborhood also contains pressures that pull him toward his past. Sparrow, who makes money through a con involving homeless dogs, attaches himself to Frankie like a younger brother. Schwiefka, who once employed Frankie at an illegal card game, wants him back at the table. Louie, Frankie’s former dealer, also reappears. When Sparrow obtains a stolen suit for Frankie ahead of an audition, Frankie is arrested. Schwiefka offers bail in return for card dealing, placing Frankie’s hopes of a musical job against the world he has tried to leave.
Drums, cards and a threatened recovery
Frankie initially resists Schwiefka’s proposal. He suspects that Schwiefka alerted the police about the stolen suit, and fears that card games will lead him back to drugs. Yet his desire to secure an audition changes his decision. He returns to Schwiefka’s all-night games, relapses, and again deals cards while using drugs. The film follows the consequences of that return rather than treating addiction as a remote problem.
Frankie gets a drummer’s tryout, but after spending 24 straight hours in a poker game, he is caught cheating and beaten. With withdrawal beginning, he cannot keep the beat at the audition and loses his chance at the job. Meanwhile, Louie visits Zosh while searching for Frankie and discovers that she has been pretending to be unable to walk. Frightened of exposure, Zosh pushes Louie over a stairwell railing. He dies, and Frankie becomes the person sought for the murder.
The film’s treatment of drug addiction made its initial release controversial. Preminger maintained that the picture would not encourage drug use because it showed severely negative consequences. Its central situation joins Frankie’s effort to remain clean with his debt to Zosh, the demands of Schwiefka and Louie, his connection to Sparrow, and Molly’s faith in his ability to begin again.
Preminger’s challenge to the Production Code
Screen rights were acquired in 1949 on behalf of John Garfield, who intended to star. Production was delayed when the Production Code Administration refused to approve the script. Joseph Breen called the basic story “unacceptable” under the Code’s ban on showing illegal drug trafficking and drug addiction. Garfield died in 1952, and Preminger acquired the rights from his estate. Nelson Algren was brought to Hollywood to work on the screenplay, but he and Preminger proved incompatible. Walter Newman replaced Algren, and Preminger and Newman made significant changes to the novel.
Sinatra accepted the lead before reading the entire script. To prepare, he observed addicts going cold turkey at drug rehabilitation clinics and learned drums from Shelly Manne. The film was made in six weeks at RKO Studios in Hollywood, from September 26 to November 4, 1955. Elmer Bernstein composed, arranged and conducted the score. Saul Bass designed the crooked-arm advertising symbol and created the animated title sequence.
The finished film was released before it received a Code seal. The PCA denied approval in December 1955, and the decision was upheld on appeal. United Artists distributed the picture despite the risk of a $25,000 MPAA fine and resigned from the MPAA that month. The film ultimately received Production Code seal number 20011 in June 1961. It earned $4,100,000 at the North American box office and received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor for Sinatra and Best Music for Bernstein. In 2020, the Library of Congress selected it for the National Film Registry.
