From Suri's escape to an underworld bond

Don No. 1 is the Hindi-dubbed title of Don, a 2007 Indian Telugu-language action drama written and directed by Raghava Lawrence. Nagarjuna leads the film as Surya, known as Suri, with Anushka, Lawrence, Kelly Dorji and Nikita also featured. The story begins in 1987, when Suri escapes police after killing the gangster responsible for his parents' murder.

While fleeing, Suri finds a drug dealer forcing young boys to sell drugs. One boy, Raghava, refuses because he fears being caught by police, and the dealer torments him. Suri kills the dealer and protects Raghava. Impressed, Raghava asks to join him, while the other boys follow. They become close to Suri and eventually form his loyal circle.

Suri and Raghava face Stephen's expansion

By 2007, Suri rules Andhra Pradesh's underworld with Raghava as his trusted lieutenant and sworn brother. The pair help police dismantle corrupt activities. Their position is challenged by Stephen, a Mumbai don seeking to extend his criminal empire into Andhra Pradesh. Stephen had previously killed a rival don in Goa, taken the rival's wife as a concubine and seized control there. He sends his henchman, S. P. Bhushan, to learn about the dominant local don.

Bhushan is appointed by the Inspector General of Police to handle Stephen's case, although nobody in the department knows who the traitor is. He approaches influential people across the state. Seshu, an industrialist in a pharmaceutical company and Suri's former business partner, is the only one to accept Stephen's proposal. After Suri learns of this, Seshu is killed by Suri's men.

Bhushan later rapes and kills a minister's daughter. Suri kills Bhushan in a pub, while Raghava and the public spread a story that the victim killed him in self-defense. Suri then tells the I.G. the truth and urges him to verify every officer for corruption, treachery or spying. The I.G. asks forgiveness, and Suri forgives him.

Stephen learns of Bhushan's death from Anthony and recognises Suri's power. He wants Suri brought to Mumbai, but Suri's senior henchman Banerji instead makes Stephen come to Andhra Pradesh. At their meeting, Suri refuses to work with Stephen and warns him never to look toward the state again. Stephen attempts to kill Suri, but his men are eliminated. Rathnam, seeking revenge on Raghava over his son's death in a college drug incident, shelters Stephen in Hyderabad. His bomb attacks and other plans against Suri fail, and Raghava kills him.

Romance, betrayal and the film's release

Alongside the conflict, Suri falls in love with Priya. She initially dislikes him, but later decides he is a good person and returns his love. Raghava falls for Nandhini, who appears to accept his feelings. Her connection to Stephen changes the situation between the rival sides.

M. L. Kumar Chowdary produced Don under the Sri Keerthi Creations banner. Lawrence made his debut as a music composer with the film, and the soundtrack was released on the Aditya Music label. Don was released on 20 December 2007. It was dubbed into Hindi as Don No. 1 in 2008 and into Tamil under the same title. The film was also remade as the Bangladeshi Don Number 1 in 2012 and the Oriya Don in 2010. The film grossed ₹59 crore worldwide against a ₹26 crore budget, with a worldwide distributor share of ₹36 crore.
