Ullas and the Kalasadhan troupe

Ganagandharvan, translated as Celestial singer, is a 2019 Indian Malayalam-language musical comedy-drama written and directed by Ramesh Pisharody. The cast includes Mammootty, Santhi Mayadevi, Manoj K. Jayan, Siddique and Suresh Krishna. Released on 27 September 2019, the film centres on Kalasadhan Ullas, a ganamela singer who has worked with the popular Kalasadhan troupe for 26 years.

Ullas lives with his wife Mini and their daughter Sowmya. Sandra enters his life for a nefarious purpose, setting in motion incidents that Ullas must handle. Pisharody said the film concerned the life of a senior singer, with a character influenced by singers he knew. He also said it was not a fully serious story and would include humour.

A Kochi shoot in 2019

Pisharody announced his second directorial venture on 1 November 2018, unveiling a title poster featuring Mammootty. The poster was screened in theatres alongside Drama, the 2018 Mohanlal-starrer. Newcomer Vanditha was brought in for one of the female lead roles.

Principal photography began in Kochi on 1 June 2019 and was completed on 22 July. Deepak Dev composed the music, while Rafeeq Ahmed and Santhosh Varma wrote the lyrics.

Critics divided on the script

The film received mixed reviews. The Times of India gave it 3.5 out of 5, praising its acting and script and describing Pisharody's storytelling as straightforward and old school. Manorama Online awarded 3 out of 5, saying Pisharody presented a small but relevant subject without making it tedious or irksome.

Sify rated it 2 out of 5, calling it average and finding its script and packaging dull despite what it considered a fine underlying idea. The News Minute gave 1.5 out of 5, saying the comedy was badly written apart from occasional wisecracks and an old-film reference involving Karaman Sudheer.

Anna M. M. Vetticad of Firstpost gave 0.25 out of 5 and criticized the writing as anti-feministic. Manoj Kumar R. of The Indian Express awarded zero out of five, finding the story skeletal and biased. S. R. Praveen of The Hindu wrote that the film's appearance, aesthetics and structure recalled an earlier period in Malayalam cinema.

Figures from overseas theatrical runs

In the UAE, the film grossed $125,902 during its opening weekend and $172,068 in three weeks. It grossed $18,710, or ₹13.32 lakh, in the United States over three weeks. Its worldwide gross was ₹18.5 crore, with final global theatrical share estimated at ₹9.75 crore and recovery of more than 20 percent.
