A devotional struggle

Palayathu Amman is a 2000 Indian Tamil-language devotional film directed by Rama Narayanan. Meena plays the goddess Palayathu Amman. Ramki plays Shekar, and Divya Unni plays Savithri.

A child under threat

The story opens in a gurukula, where a saint tells his students that Devi will soon be born to destroy evil. Satan kills the saint, but Devi's birth proceeds. A child grows up with Shekar and Savithri and faces repeated harm from Satan. Palayathu Amman saves the child each time. Savithri believes the goddess wants to take her child away and tries to protect the child from her.

From Devatha to Palayathu Amman

The film completed shooting under the working title Devatha before Rama Narayanan chose Palayathu Amman as its title. S. A. Rajkumar composed the music.

Critical response and comedy

Malini Mannath of Chennai Online wrote that the film was another good-versus-evil and Goddess-testing-devotee story, with nothing new in its subject or treatment. She appreciated the CG toward the climax. The comedy subplot includes a scene in which Vivek parodies the climax of Parasakthi (1952), and the subplot gained immense popularity.
