A child spared by Sudalai

After an astrologer is consulted, Ukrapandi orders Govind to kill his baby to save his wife's life. Govind passes the child to Sudalai with the same order, but the child survives.

Twenty-five years later, Govind recruits Poovarasan for work. Poovarasan falls in love with Kaveri and saves Senadhipathy.

A wedding feud between families

Senadhipathy's son Sinrasu and Ukrapandi's daughter Sundari love each other, and their parents initially agree to their marriage. Before the ceremony, Senadhipathy recalls a stinging humiliation by Ukrapandi and demands that Ukrapandi repeat it. Ukrapandi refuses, and the marriage is cancelled.

During Sinrasu's wedding, Poovarasan stops the ceremony and takes Sinrasu to marry Sundari. Village chiefs exonerate the couple but decide to teach Poovarasan a lesson, requiring him to attend the Bhoomi Pooja, a ritual held before constructing a structure.

Karthik, music and comedy

D. S. Ramanujam of The Hindu found Karthik convincing in a heavy role. R. P. R. of Kalki praised Ilaiyaraaja's music and Goundamani's humour, describing the film as having enough love, sentiment, fights, sadness and comedy, though calling its mixed vessel taken from the museum.

Poovarasan is a Tamil-language Indian masala film directed by Gokula Krishnan. Released on 9 August 1996, it stars Karthik and Rachna Banerjee, in Banerjee's debut Tamil film. Ilaiyaraaja composed the music, with lyrics by Vaali.
