Naga’s first feature film

Anandhapurathu Veedu is a 2010 Indian Tamil-language supernatural mystery film. It was co-written and directed by Naga, a Tamil television director whose serials include Marmadesam, Vidathu Karuppu and Chidambara Rahasiyam. The film was Naga’s feature-film debut.

Naga wrote the film with Sharath Haridasan and Indra Soundar Rajan. Director S. Shankar’s S Pictures produced it, and it was released on 9 July 2010. Nandha and Chaya Singh play the lead roles, while child artist Aryan made his debut. Meera Jasmine had originally been selected as the lead actress before Chaya Singh replaced her.

A return to Bala’s childhood house

Fifteen years after an accident that killed his parents, Bala returns to his hometown with his wife Revathi and their son Anand. The family plans to spend a couple of nights in the large house where Bala grew up. His return brings back memories of the place.

Anand has a disability to speak, and he sees supernatural movements around the house without being able to tell anyone what he has witnessed. Revathi suffers from claustrophobia and comes to believe that poltergeist activity is taking place there. She urges Bala to return to Chennai, while Anand enjoys the ghosts’ presence and sees no problem in it.

Tensions arise in Bala and Revathi’s love marriage. Revathi then learns that the trip was not a holiday: Bala has brought the family there to escape rowdies to whom he owes money. Bala’s classmate and business partner Jeeva arrives to stay with them. Jeeva’s company borrowed 40 lakhs from a rowdy, a debt that grew to 50 lakhs after an agent who was meant to give him two crores disappeared.

Critical response and music

Sify said that the film did not live up to its promise, describing it as a supernatural thriller that became a “tame family run-of-the-mill movie.” Behindwoods found a couple of strengths but said the film lacked pace, had an uneven approach, and did not scare the audience. It considered the film suited to people seeking relaxed family fare.

The New Indian Express wrote that, despite being labelled a supernatural thriller with comic elements, the film generated neither fear nor laughter. The paper also noted its subplots, arriving characters, and narration it considered bland and juvenile in places. The soundtrack was composed by Ramesh Krishnan and includes “Thaaye Enge” and “Chithrai Vaanam.”
