A lawyer takes Sundaram’s appeal

Mounam Sammadham, translated as “Silence is acquiescence”, is a 1990 Indian Tamil-language legal thriller written by S. N. Swamy, directed by K. Madhu and produced by Kovai Chezhiyan. Mammootty makes his Tamil film debut as Raja, with Amala also starring. The story follows a lawyer’s attempt to challenge a death sentence.

Sundaram is convicted of murdering Vijayalakshmi, his sister-in-law, and sentenced to death. His advocate Shekar asks his friend Raja, a Supreme Court advocate, to fight the verdict in the High Court. Raja initially refuses but changes his mind after learning about Sundaram’s family. He also wants to correct the negative opinion held by Sundaram’s sister Dr. Hema after earlier encounters between them. Hema first rejects Raja but agrees because the family has no other choice.

Questions around Vijayalakshmi’s death

The High Court accepts the appeal after Raja’s argument, and he begins an investigation. Mani, the household helper and the only other person at home when Vijayalakshmi died, recounts that evening. Sundaram had been expected to leave town but returned after changing his plans. He smelled something burning, woke Mani from the porch, and both men rushed upstairs to see Vijayalakshmi’s burning body.

Raja learns that the death was first deemed a suicide. Sundaram was later accused of killing Vijayalakshmi because he was said to have had an affair with her and wished to conceal it. Raja also discovers Paramasivam, a wealthy man with scores to settle with Sundaram. Paramasivam threatens Raja and urges Vijayalakshmi’s mother and brother Muthu to fight the case, but Raja refuses to drop the appeal.

Evidence tested in court

Shekar identifies three key pieces of evidence. Rani, a prostitute, testified that Sundaram was a customer. Neighbour Munusamy said he saw Sundaram molesting Vijayalakshmi through a glass window on the night of her death. A letter, supposedly written by Vijayalakshmi to her mother, alleged that Sundaram had abused her.

Raja persuades Rani to withdraw what he regards as false testimony. Her later High Court evidence repeats the earlier account, and Raja believes she appears to be under duress. As the hearing proceeds, he tests the claims made against Sundaram, while Hema’s resentment of Raja begins to soften.

A debut, songs and contrasting reviews

Mammootty’s role in Mounam Sammadham was his first in a Tamil film. The film took inspiration from Sandhyakku Virinja Poovu, another of his films. Ilaiyaraaja composed the music. “Kalyaana Thaen Nilaa” uses the Darbari Kanada raga, with every sentence ending in “la”, while “Chik Chik Chaa” is a synth-pop number.

Released on 15 June 1990, the film became a commercial and critical success. N. Krishnaswamy of The Indian Express praised the cast performances, particularly Mammootty’s, alongside Ilaiyaraaja’s music, the cinematography and Shivaji’s comedy. C. R. K. of Kalki was less positive, describing it as like an ordinary novel. Rajasri wrote the lyrics for the dubbed Telugu version, Lawyer The Great.
