A mechanic shop and a romance

Gurudeva is a 2005 Indian romantic drama directed by Jaffer and produced by K. Kaliyamurthy under the banner of Sriselva Muthukumara Movies. It was shot simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu, with the Telugu version titled Guru. Jai Akash stars alongside Pranathi, Nassar and Riyaz Khan. Sabesh Murali composed the music. The audio was released on 31 January 2005 at AVM Studios.

Guru is a street rowdy who hangs out at a mechanic shop owned by Mari, a handicapped man who advises him. They lead a happy life. Deva, a rich heiress, falls in love with Guru. Later, they decide to marry.

A delayed Tamil release

The Tamil film was scheduled to open on 14 February, but its release was delayed. It opened on 1 April 2005 alongside the low-budget films Girivalam and Thaka Thimi Tha. A critic from Sify wrote that there was “nothing new” in the presentation and said Sabesh Murali rehashed old “gana” songs of Deva. The film did not fare well at the box office.

An on-set dispute

During the making of the Telugu version, an intimate scene between Jai Akash and Pranathi was filmed in the presence of an assistant director. The assistant director was unsatisfied with the shot, so it was taken eight times. Jai Akash said the scene had been filmed enough times. After the assistant director did not agree, Akash slapped him.
