Love and rebirth across two lives

Hameshaa, meaning “Forever” in English, is a 1997 Indian Hindi-language romance film written by Ranbir Pushp and directed by Sanjay Gupta. It stars Aditya Pancholi, Saif Ali Khan and Kajol, with Aruna Irani and Kader Khan in supporting roles. The film explores reincarnation through two romances linked across years. It marked Gupta’s third collaboration with Pancholi.

Raja, Rani and Yash’s betrayal

Raja and Yash Vardhan have been friends since childhood, despite Raja’s middle-class background and Yash’s wealth. At college, Raja meets Rani and falls in love at first sight. When Rani is caught in a storm while travelling to meet him, Yash gives her a ride and becomes instantly smitten with her as well.

Raja tells Rani that he loves her, but she initially brushes him off. He plans to throw himself from a cliff, until Rani stops him and realizes that she loves him. Yash sees the couple together and is shocked. Later, Raja takes Yash to the cliff and tries to lift his depressed friend’s spirits, holding Yash’s hand as he leans backward over the edge to demonstrate his trust. Yash confesses his own love for Rani, then lets go. Rani witnesses Raja’s murder and tells Yash that she and Raja will return before jumping to her death.

Reshma and Raju remember the past

Years later, Yash meets Reshma, a folk dancer who looks exactly like Rani. He promises to pay for treatment for her sick father and support her talent, bringing them to his palace. Reshma meets musician Raju, who resembles Raja, and begins remembering events from her earlier life. Raju remembers nothing.

Yash attempts to bribe Raju into leaving for Mumbai and secretly arranges an engagement to Reshma without her consent. Through dreams, Reshma learns of Raja’s murder. She tells Raju what she has experienced, but he believes she is mentally unstable and returns her to Yash. After Reshma escapes again, Raju remembers the past and joins her on a train as they flee Yash. Kader Khan plays Raju’s Chacha, while Satyen Kappu plays Reshma’s father.
