Twin brothers in Los Angeles

Jeans is a 1998 Indian Tamil-language romantic comedy written and directed by Shankar. Ashok Amritraj and Murali Manohar produced the film, which stars Prashanth and Aishwarya Rai. Lakshmi, Radhika Sarathkumar, Nassar, Senthil and Raju Sundaram appear in supporting roles. A. R. Rahman composed its soundtrack and background score, with cinematography by Ashok Kumar and editing by B. Lenin and V. T. Vijayan.

The story begins in Los Angeles with Nachiappan, a wealthy widowed Indian-American restaurateur, and his identical twin sons Viswanathan, called Visu, and Ramamoorthy, called Ramu. Both are medical students who help at the restaurant with chief cook Juno. At an airport, Visu assists Madhumitha, known as Madhu, her younger brother Madhesh and their grandmother Krishnaveni, who have arrived from Chennai. Krishnaveni needs surgery for a brain tumour.

Visu later discovers that a patient mix-up has led surgeons to operate on the wrong side of Krishnaveni’s brain, temporarily paralysing her. He confronts the hospital administration, obtains a corrective operation and pursues compensation. The hospital grants Krishnaveni a $2 million settlement to avoid a high-profile lawsuit. Madhu falls in love with Visu after seeing his dedication to her grandmother.

A marriage condition and a false twin

Nachiappan rejects the romance because he insists his identical sons must marry identical twin daughters. His fixation has roots in his relationship with his twin brother Pechiappan, who lives in Karaikudi. Years earlier, Pechiappan’s wife Sundarambal abused Nachiappan’s pregnant wife Meiyaththa, who died immediately after giving birth to Visu and Ramu. Nachiappan took the infants to America so that the tragedy would not destroy his brother’s marriage.

Krishnaveni tells Nachiappan that Madhu has an identical twin sister, Vaishnavi, who was supposedly raised separately in an orthodox Brahmin household. The families travel to India for a proposed double wedding. Madhu secretly alternates between herself and the invented Vaishnavi, presenting Vaishnavi as reserved and traditional. Ramu falls for the persona without knowing the truth. As the arrangement continues, Madhu becomes troubled by the deception and decides it must stop.

Record-scale production and worldwide locations

Made on a then-record budget of ₹20 crore, Jeans was completed in a year and a half and became Shankar’s first film to shoot major portions outside India. Its December 1996 launch took place at AVM Studios in Vadapalani, Chennai. Invitations were printed, wrapped in denim and hand-delivered by Shankar. At the producers’ request, cast and crew wore their favourite blue jeans.

Abbas was first considered for Visu and Ramu, but withdrew because of call sheet problems. Prashanth took the dual roles and worked exclusively on the project, sacrificing seven films. Rai played Madhu and Vaishnavi, though Savitha Radhakrishnan dubbed her voice. Raju Sundaram made his acting debut. S. T. Venky handled special effects, assisted by graphics created by Pentafour Software.

Filming included Los Angeles, Las Vegas, California, the Grand Canyon, New Jersey, New York City, Chennai, Karaikudi and Madurai. A 30-day trip for “Poovukkul” included the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Empire State Building, Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal, Egyptian pyramids, Colosseum and Eiffel Tower. Jeans had a limited release on 14 April 1998 and a wide release on 24 April. It won four Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, Rahman won the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director, Tamil, and the film received the National Film Award for Best Special Effects. It was also India’s official submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

One film in three languages

Jeans was dubbed into Telugu and released under the same title on 9 May 1998, and the Telugu version was also a commercial success. Reviewing it, Giddaluri Gopalrao of Zamin Ryot called the film diverse, quirky and entertaining, with all of the special features and full commercial value.

A Hindi version followed later the same year, again under the title Jeans. Unlike the Tamil and Telugu versions, it failed at the box office. It is the Hindi version that its rights holder, Shemaroo, publishes free on its own channel, so that is the one this page plays.
