Raju between New Zealand and India

Bavagaru Bagunnara is a 1998 Indian Telugu-language romantic comedy drama. Jayanth C. Paranjee directed the film, and Nagendra Babu produced it for Anjana Productions. Chiranjeevi plays Raju, with Rambha and Rachana in the principal cast. Paresh Rawal, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Srihari and Brahmanandam are among the supporting performers.

Raju divides his life between New Zealand and India. In New Zealand, he owns a restaurant. In India, he runs an orphanage in his sister’s name. Swapna is a student in New Zealand who is staying with her uncle. She first confronts Raju because she thinks he beat up her friend. Once she discovers that he was not responsible, her feelings for him change and she falls in love with him.

Sandhya's difficult arrangement

Raju travels to India to look after the orphanage and encounters Sandhya, a pregnant woman whose love affair has failed. She is on the verge of suicide when he intervenes. Raju offers an unusual arrangement: he will present himself as her husband until her child is born, then leave her so that she can live as a deserted wife. The two go to Sandhya’s village to put the plan into effect.

Sandhya’s father, Rao Bahadur Rajendra Prasad, resists the arrangement at first. Pressure from other family members eventually leads him to agree. The situation becomes more difficult when Swapna arrives in India and finds Raju apparently married to Sandhya. In her eyes, he has become her brother-in-law. Raju tries to explain, but his account does not convince her. The story combines this romantic confusion with emotional strain around Sandhya and her family.

A comic adaptation with New Zealand scenes

The core premise was inspired by the 1995 American film A Walk in the Clouds. That film was a serious drama, while Paranjee and the Paruchuri brothers adapted the material as a romantic comedy drama with substantial comic elements. Rambha’s character was a principal source of comedy. The narrative was devised to balance humour and emotion.

The project followed Chiranjeevi’s box-office successes with Hitler and Master, both released in 1997. Those films had placed him in serious roles, while fans had wanted lighter performances that drew on his comic timing, dancing and fight scenes. Bavagaru Bagunnara was Paranjee’s second film after the success of his debut, Premichukundam Raa, released in 1997. Bhagyashree was initially considered for the role ultimately played by Rachana.

Important portions were filmed in New Zealand. Paranjee noted that Chiranjeevi’s introduction differed from those in his earlier films, beginning with a song rather than an action scene. Chiranjeevi performed a bungee jump for that song. The New Zealand scenes also include comic material involving Chiranjeevi, Rambha and Brahmanandam. After the action shifts to India, the humour continues through Chiranjeevi and Rambha’s interactions, with Kota Srinivasa Rao and Srihari contributing to the comic appeal.

Songs, release and contemporary response

Mani Sharma composed the music. The audio was described as a huge hit, with all of its songs becoming chartbusters. “Aunty Koothura,” sung by S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and K. S. Chitra, was an instant chartbuster and a major hit among mass audiences. The film was released on 9 April 1998 and became a major commercial success.

In a review dated 24 April 1998, Griddaluru Gopalrao of Zamin Ryot called the film “a laughing riot.” Gopalrao praised the novelty of its story and screenplay, along with Paranjee’s direction, Chiranjeevi’s performance and Sharma’s soundtrack. Y. Maheswara Reddy of The New Indian Express wrote that it was “worth watching.” Audiences applauded Chiranjeevi’s introductory scene and bungee-jump stunt, while his bell-bottom pants became a trend. Brahmanandam later included Bavagaru Bagunnara among the top 11 films of his career.
