Brothers divided by duty and mischief

Race Gurram, translated as Race Horse, is a 2014 Indian Telugu-language action comedy co-written and directed by Surender Reddy. Nallamalupu Srinivas, known as Bujji, produced it under Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Productions. Allu Arjun and Shruti Haasan star, with Shaam and Ravi Kishan in supporting roles. S. Thaman composed the music and background score, while Manoj Paramahamsa handled cinematography and Gautham Raju edited the film.

The story centres on brothers Ram and Lakshman, called Lucky, whose temperaments could scarcely be more different. Ram is an honourable ACP. Lucky is unemployed, carefree and regularly in conflict with his older brother. Their family tension becomes bound up with Ram's investigation of Madhali Siva Reddy, a mercenary turned politician. Ram wants to stop Siva Reddy from contesting elections after the death of his friend, ACP Sameer, who had been investigating the politician.

Lucky meets Sweety, also called Spandana, the daughter of industrialist Bheem Prakash, in an elevator. She keeps a neutral expression through every situation, even when a bank robbery puts her at gunpoint. Sweety explains that she feels emotions inside, following her father's teaching that emotions should remain controlled. Lucky disagrees and, having fallen for her, sets out to change her outlook. Their regular meetings lead Sweety to express her feelings and return his affection.

A jeep, a mistaken target and revenge

Ram tells Bheem Prakash that Sweety is spending time with a lazy, spoilt man, repaying Prakash for an earlier prank. Prakash rejects Lucky as a prospective husband for his daughter. The disagreement worsens the brothers' feud. After a serious fight with Ram, and being slapped by his mother for the first time, Lucky takes Ram's jeep. It contains files that incriminate Siva Reddy.

Siva Reddy's men mistake Lucky for Ram and attack him. The jeep and its files go up in flames, while the attackers reveal that their intended target was Ram. Lucky's anger changes once he understands the danger facing his brother. He kidnaps Siva Reddy, assaults him and leaves him tied upside down to a tree, sending the politician to hospital. Lucky later tells Siva Reddy's father, Peddi Reddy, that he has realised how deeply he cares for Ram.

Lucky also attempts to reunite Ram with Shwetha, the woman Ram once loved, hoping a happier Ram will stop interfering in Lucky's own relationship. After recovering and becoming an MLA, Siva Reddy retaliates against Lucky and his family. He uses a false sexual-harassment allegation to get Ram suspended, and has the family home demolished on the claim that it was built illegally. When Ram learns Lucky stole the jeep, he drives Lucky from the family. Siva Reddy then abducts Lucky and leaves him hanging from the same tree.

From Hyderabad to a worldwide release

The project was announced in 2012, and received the title Race Gurram in late October that year. It was launched on 24 October 2012, Vijayadasami day, at Ramanaidu Studios in Hyderabad. D. Ramanaidu conducted the formal pooja, Chiranjeevi gave the clap, V. V. Vinayak directed the first shot, and Shyam Prasad Reddy switched on the camera. Shruti Haasan was selected as the female lead after Samantha was initially approached.

Principal photography began in Hyderabad on 13 May 2013. After an initial Hyderabad schedule, filming moved to Norway for scenes and songs, then continued in Geneva and Milan. Two songs were scheduled across Switzerland and Italy. Back in Hyderabad, “Cinema Choopista Maava” was filmed at Annapurna Studios 7 Acres under Johnny Master's choreography. The production also filmed at Golconda Fort, Ramoji Film City, Jadcherla, near Charminar and locations around Hyderabad. The entire shoot finished on 22 February 2014.

Post-production ran alongside the final shooting phase, with work reported at Chennai B2h Studios. The Central Board of Film Certification issued a U/A certificate on 4 April 2014 for a 163-minute film, and the final copy was ready that day. The soundtrack album was released on 16 March at Park Hyatt in Hyderabad. Race Gurram released worldwide on 11 April 2014. It became Allu Arjun's first film to gross more than ₹100 crore, earned a distributor's share of ₹59.4 crore, and was the highest-grossing Telugu film of that year. It received Filmfare Awards for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Playback Singer, Male.
