An elopement interrupted in Palakkad
Malabar Police is a 1999 Indian Tamil-language crime comedy written and directed by P. Vasu. Sathyaraj plays a dual role, alongside Abbas, Khushbu and Mumtaj. The story begins in Palakkad, Kerala, where Raja and Julie are in love. Raja is of Tamil ancestry, while Julie comes from a Syrian Christian family.
Julie's wealthy parents strongly oppose the relationship and confine her. Raja and Julie decide to elope at dawn so they can marry. Their journey changes when they witness the murder of minister Madhavan Nair. Varadappan, the killer, pursues the couple in an attempt to remove the witnesses, but Raja and Julie escape and travel by train to Chennai.
A CBI investigation in Chennai
Chinnasamy, a CBI officer from a Tamil family that has lived in Kerala for three generations, is assigned to investigate the minister's murder. In Chennai, he searches for Raja with help from constable Govindan. The case also draws in Nagarajan and Sivashankar, two prominent Chennai businessmen whose rivalry shapes the investigation.
Chinnasamy suspects Nagarajan, who is Varadappan's boss. After Varadappan is killed in a blast following his arrest, Sivashankar joins Chinnasamy in gathering evidence against Nagarajan. At the same time, Raja and Julie are accidentally separated and search for one another. Chinnasamy finds Julie and employs her as a maid in his home.
Music and contemporary responses
S. A. Rajkumar composed the music. “Hollywood Mudhal” was lyricist Na. Muthukumar's debut song. Malabar Police was released on 6 August 1999 and was one of the most successful Tamil films of that year.
K. P. S. of Kalki wrote that viewers could enjoy the last 10 minutes if they could endure old-fashioned sentiments and lengthy dialogue. D. S. Ramanujam of The Hindu wrote that Sathyaraj was at ease delivering Malayalam-mixed Tamil while unravelling the minister's murder mystery, with the eloping young couple making it more interesting. Ramanujam also wrote that Ashok Kumar handled the camera with known efficiency, while S. A. Rajkumar's music was adequate.
