A Chennai slum and a cycle rickshaw

Naai Kutty, translated as Puppy, is a 2009 Indian Tamil-language drama written and directed by Sathaji. V. A. Durai produced the film, which was released on 31 December 2009. Newcomer Selvin plays Naai Kutty, an orphan raised in a Chennai slum by a cycle rickshaw puller. Nicole plays Malli, while Soori, Sippy and Jayakumaran appear in supporting roles.

Naai Kutty spends his time drinking with his friend Maari, played by Soori, rather than working. Malli sells flowers at a temple near the slum and loves him. Her friend Ammu, played by Sippy, regards Naai Kutty as a brother. After the death of the man who raised him, Naai Kutty takes up the cycle rickshaw himself.

Work brings him into Reddy's world

The rickshaw puts Naai Kutty in contact with prostitutes who hire him and pay him well. He begins regularly carrying them, earns enough to buy an auto rickshaw, and becomes involved in the dangers surrounding their work. When rowdies try to misbehave with women at a brothel, Naai Kutty fights them and saves the prostitutes.

Reddy, played by Jayakumaran, is described as the kingpin of the flesh trade. Impressed by Naai Kutty's strength, Reddy hires him as a henchman. The story follows Naai Kutty from idleness and dependence towards work, money and a position inside Reddy's operation, while Malli and Ammu remain connected to his life in the slum.

A restarted project with a new cast

The project was announced in mid-2008 by producer V. A. Durai, whose earlier productions included Pithamagan (2003) and Gajendra (2004). It was initially reported that S. S. Joe, an associate of Ram, would make a film about a youth raised in a Chennai slum. Joe had himself been raised in Chennai's slums, and was expected to portray the emotional and social plight of slum dwellers with reality as its strength.

Prasanna and Nicole originally signed as the leads, Santhanam was approached for a significant role, and Sundar C. Babu was selected as music composer. The film was inaugurated in Chennai on 24 September 2008 without S. S. Joe present. Durai subsequently restarted it with a new script because of similarities with the Kannada film Nanda Loves Nanditha. Sathaji became director, Selvin replaced Prasanna after he opted out, Soori replaced Santhanam, and Kannada music director Vijayabharathi composed the music.

Vijayabharathi composed both the score and soundtrack. The soundtrack has six tracks and was released by actor Silambarasan on 25 July 2009. C. H. Prasath handled cinematography and K. Thanikachalam edited the film. Sify wrote that the film had “nothing positive” and called it “a waste of time.”
