A doctor arrives in Vellankoil

Oru Kai Osai, translated as The sound of one hand, is a 1980 Indian Tamil-language film written, produced and directed by K. Bhagyaraj. Bhagyaraj stars alongside Ashwini, and the film was released on 25 July 1980 after a delay from June. It was Bhagyaraj's second film as a director.

The story is set in Vellankoil, where Dr. Amaravathi arrives after rejecting several other villages in search of a peaceful life. Her medical abilities quickly become known when she treats a child who has fallen from a tree. The child's mother offers Amaravathi a place to stay in gratitude.

Chinna Pannai and Amaravathi

Soon after arriving, Amaravathi sees Chinna Pannai attempting suicide on a railway track. A train passes on an adjacent track, interrupting the attempt. She repeatedly encounters his unsuccessful attempts and confronts him. Chinna Pannai explains that a traumatic childhood experience left him disabled and feeling that life has no meaning. Amaravathi treats him, and he comes to have feelings for her.

Mangatha, Chinna Pannai's cousin, has long loved him despite his disability. She asks Pannaiyar, her guardian and Chinna Pannai's father, to arrange their marriage. Pannaiyar hesitates because of social pressure and seeks a groom without a disability for Mangatha. Her determination is shaken when she learns that Chinna Pannai loves Amaravathi, and she renounces her feelings for him.

Chinna Pannai signals that he wants to marry Amaravathi, but she rejects him. He is heartbroken, while Amaravathi consoles him as he slowly recovers. Her toddler daughter Ganga and her cousin later arrive in Vellankoil. Amaravathi tells Chinna Pannai that she became pregnant out of wedlock after her lover died in a train accident, then left home to avoid disgrace for her family.

Ganga quickly forms a bond with Chinna Pannai, who becomes protective of her. After Amaravathi scolds Ganga, he slaps Amaravathi in anger, causing a confrontation with her cousin. His concern for Ganga's health later affects Amaravathi, and he performs elaborate rituals for the child. Mangatha, while helping with household work, develops a mutual attraction with Amaravathi's cousin brother.

Sangili, caste and reception

Sangili, Vellankoil's guardsman, frightens the villagers and collects protection money from every household. Amaravathi refuses to pay. When Minor, a landlord from a nearby village, sends men to abduct her, Sangili protects her and gains Amaravathi's respect. Sangili later orders the villagers to boycott Minor's fields because of Minor's behaviour. Minor responds by planning to contaminate the well water with pesticides, but Chinna Pannai overhears the plan and informs Sangili.

Casteism was the film's main theme. Bhagyaraj based it on his experiences in Vellankoil, Gobichettipalayam, where the entire film was shot. Ashwini's doctor character was partially inspired by Bhagyaraj's mother. Kovai Senthil made his film debut in Oru Kai Osai. M. S. Viswanathan composed the music, and “Muthuthaaragai” is set in the Carnatic raga Charukesi.

Kanthan of Kalki praised Bhagyaraj's performance as a mute man, while playing on the title by calling the film “oru pakkam vendha dosai,” meaning a dosa fried on only one side. Pa. Vanmathi of Anna praised Bhagyaraj's acting and wrote that the film does not bore anywhere and can be enjoyed by everyone. The film won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize and was remade in Telugu as Pranaya Geetham in 1981. Murugan, who played Sangili, adopted that character's name as his prefix.
